会見では、東京電力福島第1原発から20キロ圏内に放置された動物の写真をダライ・ラマに見せる記者もいた。さらに、記者は「人間にも動物にも、放射能におびえずに生きる権利があるのではないか」と問いかけた。ダライ・ラマは20キロ圏内の惨状に顔をしかめながらも、

「常に物事は全体を見るべきで、一面だけを見て決めるべきではない。破壊的な目的で使うものは、破壊的なものしか産まない」

として、広島を訪問した時のエピソードを披露。

「原子力が兵器として使われるのであれば決して望ましくない」

一方で、「平和目的ならば別問題」と、当面は原子力をエネルギーとして活用すべきだとの考えを示した。

原子力以外の発電手段については

「ダムは自然を破壊するなどの悪影響がある。風力、太陽エネルギーもあるが、十分ではないかもしれない。十分というのは、『先進国にとって十分』ということではく、これから発展を遂げる国にとっても十分でなければならない。そうでなければ、貧富の差が広がってしまう」

と、現時点で開発されている代替エネルギーでは、将来の電力需要を満たすのは困難だとの見方を示した。ただ、

「安全には万全を期すことが大事。あなた方が『原発はいらない』とお決めになるのなら、それはそれでいいと思う」

と、国内で広がっている「脱原発」への動きに対する批判は避けた。

さすがである。現実主義者らしく、とてもバランスのとれた見方で、感服した。

自分の国の将来を見据えているんだね。なによりも内陸部にある資源の乏しい小さな国や貧しい国が、大国の政治に左右されない安定的な電源を確保しようと思ったら現時点で実現可能な電源は原発しかないものな。
